Cuneyt Turktan has completed his MA degree at Bogazici University (BU) in Accounting & Finance and has studied for his BA and BS degrees at METU as well as BU. Upon graduation he has started working with PWC in NYC, USA. In 1984 returned to Istanbul as auditor and he joined KPMG. Having experience in the audit of a wide range of companies, he later joined Interbank, a local corporate bank in Istanbul, in order to develop corporate finance activities.
Following that, in 1992, he has been appointed as the Area Finance Director of Pepsi Cola International, in charge of Turkey and Israel.
In 1994, he joined Turkcell as the CEO, at the very initial stages of the corporation to develop and grow the company, which was one of the acquirers of GSM roll-out permission of the country. During his term at Turkcell, until 2001, the subscribers grew from 40 K to 12 Million plus with a total investment of 3.5 BUSD by raising funding of 1.75 BUSD for investment in the operations. In the year 2000, the company was valued to be 18 BUSD at the NYSE. This company (TKC) was the first, and still the only, company quoted and listed at NYSE from Turkey.
Following the success at the local market, he founded and transferred know how to Azercell, Azerbaijan in 1996; Geocell, Georgia in 1997; Kcell, Kazakhstan in 1999; Moldcell, Moldova and KKTCell, Cyprus in 2000. He acted as the Chairman of the Board for these companies.
In 1999, he was the crucial figure that founded Digiturk (TV ) and acquired Superonline (ISP). In 2002, he was promoted to be the Advisor to the Board until the end of 2003.
In addition to the Turkcell position at the beginning of 2002, he has been offered to be the President and CEO of a newly formed subsidiary of the Qualcomm Group and Hariri Group as a consortium, in order to restructure and develop first CDMA operations in Romania and Europe. Telemobil S.A. (ZAPP) became the fastest growing company as the third operator by successfully but still aggressively acquiring new subscribers and increasing the revenues by ten times in a very short period of time.
In 2005, Oger Telecom owned by Hariri Group had won the Turk Telecom and Avea (the GSM company) privatization bid and Cuneyt Turktan has been appointed as the CEO to third operator, Avea. Until 2009, he succeeded increasing the number of subscribers by more than 100 percent to 12.5 Million and increased the revenues by 5 times reaching to Billion dollar and moving the EBITDA from negative to positive, at the same time catching the subscriber volume of the second operator.
During 2009, he has been invited to Azerbaijan by CRA Group in order to restructure the telecom companies as the Group EVP and has been positioned within the companies as Chairman and interim CEO. Azerfon and Bakcell that had new management teams and together with the strategic directions under his supervision increased the number of new subscribers, revenues and EBITDA reaching to higher market shares and profitable levels. He stayed in Baku at different positions and continued to support operations until 2015. Since, then he has been mentoring, founding, funding, investing and developing high-tech start-ups as well as advising to large corporations.
Cuneyt Turktan has been a member of philanthropic and nongovernmental organizations; Member of Board of Trustees of BU and TED Istanbul College; Member of Istanbul Rotary Club; Member of Institute of Directors, London; Board Member of the Turkish American Business Development Council.
